Assign checklist items to multiple individuals

I want to be able to assign a checklist item to multiple individuals simultaneously. Currently, you can only assign to one person or a department. I would like to see an "add assignee" button similar to how tasks work, so I can assign a checklist item to two or more specific people. This is important for tasks that require collaboration between specific individuals.
